First and foremost, congratulations. 2020 has been a year like none other, filled with a wide variety of stressors that have impacted lives on a global scale. It is perfectly okay to feel anxious, nervous, depressed, or just outright lost. Now more than ever, it is okay to not feel okay. No matter how worn down you might feel, the fact is that you have managed to persevere in spite of all of these adversities. Take pride in that fact, pat yourself on the shoulder, and give yourself a round of applause, because you have earned the right to feel great about yourself.

Your mental health is important. The same way in which New Year’s Resolutions are traditionally dedicated to improving your physical health, the same amount of attention needs to be placed on your mental health as well. Building healthy habits and practicing self care can go a long way towards fortifying your mental health. Here are 5 New Years Resolutions to make sure that happens in 2021:

Learn To Let Go

Learning to let go of circumstances that are out of your control is key to both protecting and improving your mental health. Successfully navigating through all of your personal, social, and financial responsibilities is hard enough, there’s no need to also worry about situations that you are unable to change. Learning from the past is fine, but attempting to relive or redo the past is an impossible task.

Give Yourself A Break

Rest is essential in order to maintain a healthy mental state. Similar to how your physical body is more fatigued the more active it is, your mind gets fatigued in the same way. Take breaks, sleep well, and give your mind time to heal.

Start A Journal

Finding a positive outlet to express yourself is vital. Bottling up your emotions only adds to the stress that your mind is already under. Make better use of your time and mental stamina by cataloging all of your thoughts into a personal journal. This allows you to physically come face to face with the thoughts and emotions that are racing in your mind. Having the ability to read these thoughts will allow for you to better process them and ultimately overcome them.

Take Care of Yourself

More times than not, especially during this time of the year, so much attention is placed on helping others with little regard for your own well-being. Avoid catering to someone else’s happiness and mental health at the expense of your own. You are allowed to treat yourself with kindness without having to feel selfish. Caring for yourself will better allow you to help others and make genuine long-term improvements. Remember, choosing to center yourself is far from a decision to be self-centered.

Seek Professional Help

You don’t have to try and deal with these struggles alone. Depression, anxiety, stress, loss, relationship issues, and lack of sleep are all just a few issues that are being heightened during this time. Reaching out and asking for professional help is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign a strength and it shows just how committed you are to improving your mental health.
